The Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde has on Thursday shown clemency to some of the inmates serving jail term sentences in the state correctional facilities.
The development according to a press statement signed by the state Correctional Facilities Public Relations Officer, SC Olanrewaju Anjola stated that Governor Makinde in his generous act on 4th of January, 2024 approved the release of 10 inmates along with the commutation of four (4) death row sentences to life imprisonment from Oyo State correctional facilities.
A copy of the statement made available to Naijanewshub online Newspaper further stressed that an additional 15 inmates received reduced sentences while another four were granted conditional release under a signed clemency order delivered this week.
Part of the statement further read as thus; “as relayed by the state Controller of Corrections, Salami Abdulraheem Olubamiji(CC), Governor Makinde’s seasonal gesture provides forgiveness and hope to dozens of incarcerated individuals across Oyo State.”
“This effort will go a long way to boost the morale of all the inmates and encourage them to involve themselves in various vocational and academic training programs provided in the facilities to rebuild their lives,” stated Controller Salami.”
The breakdown analysis of the clemency order is as follows; 10 inmates were immediately released from custody this holiday season. While Four inmates on death row have their sentence commuted to life imprisonment.
Fifteen (15) individuals currently serving term, received reductions in their term of incarceration, as another four (4) inmates that are students progressing towards degrees at the National Open University in custodial centres approved for release upon graduation.
The Nigerian Correctional custodial facilities in Oyo State house over 1,800 inmates in facilities located in Ogbomoso, Ibadan and Oyo Town.
These facilities provide substantive rehabilitation and skills-building programs daily so that restored citizens can contribute to society.
NCoS Officials are processing the required paperwork to begin discharging the approved inmates immediately.
