A group within the Labour Party(LP), known as the Labour Party Patriotic Members Congress (LPPMC) has called for suspension of the proposed national convention of the party.
The group in a press statement signed by its National Coordinator, Dr Kingsley Okundaye urged the National Working Committee of the party to suspend the proposed national convention in order to give room for wider consultation of all the stakeholders of the party.
LPPMC through a copy of the statement made available Naijanewshub online Newspaper on Monday, 21st March, 2024 stressed that the proposed Convention be restrained, cancelled and or suspended indefinitely, to give room for wider and adequate consultations of the Stakeholders and the members of the party, in line with the constitutional provisions, for a unified future Congresses and Convention.
The statement reads in part “We have watched as an unbiased arbiters of Justice for the unity, peace and progress of this great party, we must register our dissatisfaction over the sad and avoidable ugly developments in the leadership of the party.”
“It could be recalled that, we called out that all litigations should cease and the parties involved to sheath their swords when the Appeal Court in Abuja on the 6th March, 2024, affirmed Mr Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Party.”
“Unfortunately, the new dramatic twist of events between the National Chairman, Mr Abure and the organised Labour, Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC), which doubles as the founding Father of the LP; over the purported and surreptitious Convention slated on the 27th of March, 2023, have forced our leadership to review our previous stance on this burning matter.”
“The party constitution and the electoral umpire, INEC, have clearly stipulated guidelines on how Conventions should be conducted peacefully. The perceived affront and flagrant disobedience to those regulations with its attendant divisiveness, isolation, manipulations and exclusion of all the critical Stakeholders by the National Chairman, Mr Abure and his cohorts, can’t be condoned by patriotic members of this party; most especially, when such calculated sinister move is capable of running the very last fiber for peace and unity in our dear party. Hence, patriotism and wisdom demand that we as a Party, strictly adhere thus, to the followings:”
“That, the proposed Convention be restrained, cancelled and or suspended indefinitely, to give room for wider and adequate consultations of the Stakeholders and the members of the party, in line with the constitutional provisions, for a unified future Congresses and Convention.”
“We call on the organised Labour, NLC, to invoke the doctrine of necessity with relevant laws and court judgements within their disposals, to foster the proposed CTC from the Akwanga list of NWC, that will serve as a neutral entity towards conducting a harmonised and peaceful elections, congresses and convention within this year. We recommend that their membership should be equipoisely drawn from both sides of the opposing NWC leaderships – without those that are encumbered.”
“In our firm stance, we enjoin, His Excellency Peter Obi, our performing Governor, Dr Alex Otti, all our revered elected members in the various houses of Assembly and Senate, critical Stakeholders and the great Obi-dient family alike, to boldly and feistily espouse the taken over of the National Secretariat of the party by the NLC, in order to engender peace and forestall any brewing disorderliness and rascality that could cause destruction of lives and properties within her premises. Let all hands be on deck. This is not the time to sit on the fence.”
“The leadership of LPPMC is following up with the organised Labour as it had seen reasons to intervene timeously against the confusion in the party, also to have borrowed leaves from our RESOLUTION passed on the 25th Feb, 2024, which anchors on the ways and means of ending these protracted National leadership tussles in the LP. That is typical of humility and uncommon knack of responsiveness in their leadership styles.”
“We pledge herewith, to support, and promulgate every legal move that will allow peace, unity and progress a chance in the National leadership of Labour Party; as we call once more, on all the aggrieved and affected NWC members of the party, to sheath their swords and follow the trails with our founding father, the organised Labour, in rejigging and REPOSITIONING this party to the winning ways, come future elections. It is pertinent to note that, the will of the people and party supremacy must prevail at all times.”
Long live LP!
