RIVERS: Reps Approve Tinubu’s Declaration Of State Of Emergency 

 

ABUJA – The Nigerian’s House of Representatives on Thursday, 20th March, 2025 officially approved President Bola Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State.

The approval followed a brief debate and amendments to the motion presented by the Majority Leader during a plenary session led by Speaker Abbas Tajudeen.

A total of 243 members attended the plenary session, where the motion was discussed and subsequently passed. This decision comes after President Tinubu’s nationwide broadcast on Tuesday, in which he announced the six-month state of emergency in Rivers State, citing the need to address security challenges in the region.

Recall that president also suspended the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminialayi Fubara, his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Nma Odu, as well as the members of the State House of Assembly.

Tinubu further nominated Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (rtd) as Administrator to take charge of the affairs of the state for the period.

The state of emergency will be in effect for six months, with the aim of restoring peace and stability in the state. The approval marks a significant step in the government’s efforts to manage the situation in Rivers, following rising concerns over security and governance in the region.
