Tinubu To Visit Benue Wednesday Over Killings, Says Nigeria Must Live Together In Harmony

ABUJA – President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has announced that he will visit Benue State on Wednesday, June 18, to commiserate with families affected by the recent wave of deadly attacks, which claimed several lives and left communities in mourning.
Speaking in Abuja on Monday during the commissioning of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project, President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the killings, describing them as a painful reminder of the urgent need for unity, peace, and responsible conflict resolution across the country.
“I sympathize with the people of Benue. I have spoken to the Governor, the leadership, and the people. I will adjust my schedule and go to Benue on Wednesday,” Tinubu stated, before calling for a moment of silence to honor the victims.
He urged Nigerians to manage their anger and frustrations peacefully, noting that despite the country’s diversity, all citizens are members of one family.
“We are one single, huge family living in the same house staying in different rooms but living together in harmony must be the result of our diversity for prosperity,” Tinubu said. “We must consciously learn to live together and build trust, no matter the difficulty.”
The President made these remarks while commissioning the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project, a flagship infrastructure initiative covering Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6 of the capital’s water network. The project, executed by Messrs CGCOC Group with support from China, is designed to provide safe, sustainable, and sufficient water to homes, institutions, and underserved communities in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
“Today is a great day of pride and profound gratitude not only for Abuja residents but for all Nigerians,” Tinubu said. “Water is not a luxury it is a basic human right. This infrastructure is a moral and technical milestone.”
He praised FCT Minister Barr. Nyesom Wike, his team, and the Ministry of State, led by Dr. Mariya Mahmoud, for what he described as “people-focused leadership” that puts the needs of residents first.
“Thank you, Wike and your team, for exhibiting the great virtue of leadership being conscious of the needs of the people and committing to deliver on them,” the President remarked.
Tinubu described the project as a tangible example of his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, focused on human development and basic service delivery.
“When we speak of renewal, this is what we mean,” he said. “Water to drink, to clean, to grow, to build. These are the real projects that improve people’s lives.”
The President also emphasized that his government is replicating similar efforts in the power, roads, and housing sectors, noting that technicians had been reassigned to ensure rapid delivery of key infrastructure.
“These are not just development goals; they are the building blocks of our dignity and prosperity,” Tinubu stated.
Tinubu lauded the role of the People’s Republic of China in the execution of the project, calling it a model for international partnerships based on mutual respect and shared prosperity.
“To our international partners, especially our friends from China, thank you. Together, we are showing the world that impactful development comes through honest collaboration,” he said.
As the ceremony concluded, the President urged residents to protect and preserve the infrastructure, using the water resources wisely and supporting government efforts for sustainability.
“We are not here merely to lay pipes we are laying the foundation for healthier families, stronger communities, and a more productive city,” Tinubu declared.
Earlier in his remarks, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) , Barr. Nyesom Wike reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to delivering people-focused infrastructure, noting that the completion of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project is a testament to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. “This water project is not just a technical achievement; it is about equity. It is about reaching the people who have long been neglected and ensuring no part of Abuja is left behind,” Wike stated during the commissioning ceremony.
Wike emphasized that the successful execution of the project, which includes Loops 1, 2, 5, and 6, would significantly improve access to potable water across the FCT, particularly in underserved communities. “For years, our people have struggled to get clean water. Today, we have changed that narrative. This is what governance is about improving the lives of the people, not making empty promises,” he declared.
He further assured residents that the FCT Administration will not relent in pushing forward with impactful projects that address critical needs. “We are working with sincerity and urgency. From roads to health, education to water Abuja must reflect the promise of Nigeria’s capital. Mr. President has given us the support, and we will not disappoint,” Wike said.
