Rivers Assembly Insists On Fubara’s Impeachment Despite Stakeholders’ Condemnation

PORT HARCOURT — THE Rivers State House of Assembly has maintained its decision to proceed with the impeachment of Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu, brushing aside widespread outrage and condemnation from stakeholders across the state.
In a statement issued by the Chairman of the House Committee on Information, Petitions and Complaints, Enemi George, the Assembly confirmed that notices of impeachment have been formally served on both the governor and deputy governor and awaiting their responses.
The lawmakers’ clarification followed reports claiming that the Assembly had withdrawn the impeachment and tendered an apology to President Bola Tinubu over the development, which the House described as false and misleading.
The state lawmakers said the impeachment process, which commenced on Thursday, January 8, 2026, is being conducted strictly in line with the provisions of the 1999 Constitution (as amended).
They said, “The Rivers State House of Assembly is pleased to inform the good people of Rivers State that the impeachment process commenced by the House on Thursday 8th January 2026 is fully on course in line with relevant provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).
“The two notices of allegations of gross misconduct brought pursuant to Section 188 of the Constitution against the Governor and Deputy have been forwarded to them by the Speaker of the House while we await their responses.”
Reaffirming their resolve, the House said it would not be deterred by what it described as blackmail or threats, insisting that it remains committed to its constitutional duties.
The house thanked the people of Rivers State for their support and prayers, while extending goodwill to stakeholders and pro-democracy advocates who believe in the Nigerian democratic project.
“We are aware that certain persons and media platforms are at it again to misinform the public particularly to the effect that the process has been halted or discontinued. Some are trending false narratives to cause disaffection between the House and well-meaning Nigerians.
“Finally, we thank the good people of Rivers State for their prayers and encouragement and express our gratitude to all stakeholders and leaders at all levels and use this medium to extend our warm regards to all democrats who believe in the Nigerian project.”
