WASA 2025: Nigerian Army Seeks Stronger Civil Support In 2026, Reaffirms Resolve Against Terrorism, Banditary, Others

IBADAN – THE General Officer Commanding (GOC), 2 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Chinedu Nnebeife, has reaffirmed the Army’s unwavering commitment to sustaining its offensive against terrorism, banditry and other forms of criminality, while calling for stronger civil and inter-agency collaboration in 2026.
Maj.-Gen. Nnebeife made this known on Saturday during the Year 2025 West African Social Activities (WASA) of the Division, held at the Major General John Inienger Stadium, Adekunle Fajuyi Cantonment, Ibadan.
He described 2025 as a particularly demanding year for troops of the Division due to intensified operations against terrorists, bandits, kidnappers and other non-state actors threatening peace within the Division’s Area of Responsibility.
According to him, the Nigerian Army, working in synergy with other security agencies, recorded notable operational successes in 2025, especially in degrading Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) elements, as well as dismantling criminal gangs across various parts of the country.
“The year 2025 was exceptionally challenging, characterised by rigorous training and intensive operations. However, we recorded remarkable progress, and we remain grateful to Almighty God for His protection and for preserving the lives of our troops,” the GOC said.
Maj.-Gen. Nnebeife explained that the West African Social Activities is a long-standing military tradition with roots in the pre-colonial era, designed to allow officers, soldiers and their families to relax after a strenuous operational year, while strengthening unity, esprit de corps and morale within the force.
He noted that the WASA also serves as a platform to reward excellence, adding that soldiers who distinguished themselves during the year would be recognised to inspire professionalism, dedication and operational effectiveness among personnel.
While assuring that diligence and gallantry would always be rewarded, the GOC warned that indiscipline would not be tolerated, stressing that discipline remains the bedrock of the Nigerian Army.
He expressed appreciation to the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, for his commitment to training, regimentation and troop welfare, noting that the Division benefitted from various welfare initiatives and operational support during the year.
Maj.-Gen. Nnebeife also commended the Oyo State Government for its sustained support to the Nigerian Army, describing the partnership as vital to the security gains recorded in the state.
He urged residents to continue cooperating with security agencies, emphasising that security is a collective responsibility.
Oyo State Governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde, who was the Special Guest of Honour at the event, was represented by the Special Adviser on Homeland Security, retired Assistant Comptroller of Immigration, Barrister Segun Adegoke.
In his message, the governor reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with the Nigerian Army to ensure the safety of lives and property across Oyo State.
The GOC also paid tribute to the families of officers and soldiers for their sacrifices, patience and prayers, describing them as the backbone of troop morale.
The ceremony featured colourful cultural displays, traditional dances and other social activities, marking the end of the 2025 operational year and the beginning of renewed commitment towards enhanced security operations in 2026.
