Just In: Police Confirm Abduction, Killing Of “Obesere” In Ondo

AKURE — THE Ondo State Police Command has confirmed the abduction and killing of a young man, Ojo Abbey, popularly known as “Obesere,” in Isua Akoko, headquarters of Akoko South-East Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The victim was reportedly abducted on February 22, 2026, while returning to Isua from Ibilo in neighbouring Edo State.
According to residents, the assailants intercepted Abbey on the highway and whisked him into the forest along the Ondo–Edo boundary.
A resident, who identified himself simply as Tunji, said the community immediately reported the incident to the police and also organised a local search party in collaboration with hunters to comb nearby forests.
Despite days of search efforts, the victim was not found until the weekend, when his decomposing body was discovered in a forest at Igara in Edo State.
A member of the search party, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the state of the remains suggested that the victim may have been killed shortly after his abduction.
The Isua Youth Forum confirmed the incident in a statement signed by its National President, Comrade Abimbola Oluwafemi.
The group described the killing as tragic and lamented what it called the growing insecurity in the area, particularly in border communities.
The youths called on Ondo State Governor, Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, and security agencies to urgently address the security challenges facing Isua and Akoko South-East at large.
“We use this medium to call on our dear Governor of Ondo State, H.E. Gov. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, for immediate intervention on this subject matter and on the general rising insecurity in the Isua environment and Akoko South-East at large,” the statement read in part.
They also urged the Commissioner of Police and other relevant security agencies to conduct a thorough and transparent investigation, stressing that those responsible must be brought to justice.
“Every individual involved in this heinous crime must be identified, apprehended, and brought to book. Justice must not only be done but must be seen to be done,” the statement added.
Confirming the development, the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, DSP Abayomi Jimoh, said one suspect had been arrested in connection with the crime.
He disclosed that the suspect had provided useful information to investigators, while efforts were ongoing to apprehend other fleeing suspects.
Jimoh stated that the incident was reported at the Isua Police Division at about 7:45 p.m. on February 22, 2026.
“Upon receipt of the report, the Divisional Police Officer immediately mobilised patrol teams to the scene.
The victim’s vehicle, an Almera car with registration number KJA 440 DB, was recovered and secured at the station,” he said.
The police spokesman added that surveillance had been intensified in the area, with additional personnel deployed on the directive of the Commissioner of Police to prevent further incidents.
“The Command commiserates with the family of the deceased and assures the public that the perpetrators of this heinous crime will be brought to justice. Residents are urged to remain calm and continue with their lawful activities without fear,” Jimoh said.
He reiterated the Command’s commitment to combating crime and criminality across the state.
