Rivers Police Restrict Tricycles, Motorcycles To Curb ‘One-Chance’ Crimes

PORT HARCOURT – AS part of intensified measures to curb “one-chance” robberies, abductions, and other related violent crimes in Rivers State, the Police Command has announced the restriction of movement for tricycles and motorcycles across the state from 10:00pm
The Command said the policy aligns with directives from the Inspector-General of Police, Olatuji Disu, and enforced under the supervision of the Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Adepoju, as part of efforts to strengthen public safety and curb crimes involving commercial transport operators.
The Rivers State Police Command stated this in a statement issued by its Public Relations Officer, ASP Blessing Agabe, on Monday, June 15, 2026.
The police warned that operators and owners of tricycles are expected to comply strictly with the curfew restriction, adding that enforcement has been intensified and violators will be dealt with in accordance with the law.
“This enforcement takes immediate effect as part of intensified efforts to curb the growing menace of one-chance robberies, abductions, and other violent crimes in Rivers State, with a stern warning that any individual or group found involved in such criminal activities will be decisively dealt with in accordance with the law.”
The Command also prohibited the covering or alteration of vehicle registration numbers, stating that vehicles found without visible plates or with concealed identification marks will attract immediate arrest of offenders.
It called for stronger collaboration between community stakeholders, local security outfits, and Divisional Police Officers to enhance intelligence gathering and improve coordinated responses to crime.
Agabe said, “No Commercial Keke-Bus should be fitted with tinted glass or covered in any manner capable of concealing the identity of passengers or occupants. Any commercial keke-Bus found violating this directive will be impounded, while the operator will be arrested and prosecuted accordingly.
“The covering, alteration, driving without plate number or concealment of vehicle plate numbers is strictly prohibited. The Commissioner of Police has directed the arrest of offenders without hesitation.
“The use of unregistered vehicles within the State is prohibited and will no longer be tolerated. Owners and operators of such vehicles are advised to regularize their documentation without delay.”
The Command also issued safety advisories to residents, urging them to avoid boarding vehicles from isolated or poorly lit areas, remain alert to suspicious occupants, and refrain from entering vehicles with obscured interiors.
It further advised commuters to share travel details with trusted persons, avoid displaying valuables in transit, and exit any vehicle they consider unsafe.
