In a significant move to address the housing struggles faced by its officers, the Nigeria Customs Service has unveiled a groundbreaking initiative, providing 5,000 affordable housing units.
Comptroller-General Bashir Adeniyi, disclosed this during the Flag Off Ceremony of COOP Pacesetter Estate in Ajoda, Ibadan, Oyo state capital.
Adeniyi acknowledged the profound impact of inadequate housing on customs officers, recognizing the challenge it posed to their ability to fully focus on their duties.
He said to establish a sustainable housing solution, a strategic partnership has been formed with the Cooperative Mortgage Bank (CMB).
According to him, the collaboration aims to construct 5,000 housing units nationwide, offering a stable foundation for officers and empowering them to invest in their families and futures, ultimately enhancing their effectiveness in serving the nation.
The housing scheme includes diverse residences, such as two-bedroom terrace bungalows and three-bedroom terrace duplexes, strategically located in Lagos, Kaduna, Kano, Asaba, Masaka, Ibadan, Port Harcourt, and Abuja.
Adeniyi expressed gratitude to the Cooperative Mortgage Bank, Modern Shelter, and Brain & Hammer for their collaboration in this flagship housing program. The initiative seeks to create a conducive living environment where Customs Service employees and their families can thrive.
Tajudeen Aiyeola, President of the Cooperative Association of Nigeria, urged state and national governors to take deliberate actions on low-cost housing for Nigerian citizens.
He emphasized that achieving substantial provision for affordable housing is possible with government interest, encouraging local production of housing materials, cost reduction, and facilitating access to work-based loans.
Aiyeola stressed the need for government support and subsidies to benefit Nigerian citizens.
Highlighting the importance of the cooperative sector, Aiyeola noted its significance in various human endeavors, extending from the national level to its affiliates.
The cooperative structure, according to him, is a crucial instrument for the government to implement social and economic programs aimed at the welfare of Nigerians.
Commending the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) for their uncommon initiative, Aiyeola called for collective efforts from government, governmental parastatals, agencies, and the private sector to focus on member welfare and reduce turnaround time in Nigeria.
He urged all agencies in Nigeria to follow suit, acknowledging the Customs Service for initiating programs that benefit the people.
Representing Oyo State Governor, Engr Seyi Makinde, at the event, the Special Assistant to the governor expressed that this initiative would contribute to the economic development of the state. It aligns with the governor’s commitment to providing housing and other developmental projects.
He commended the Customs General for this endeavor and urged everyone to support it, emphasizing its potential to boost the state’s economy and provide value to Nigerian agencies.
