Effurun Killing: Officers Dismissed, As Police Track Fleeing Suspects

ABUJA — THE Nigeria Police Force has intensified efforts to apprehend a driver and two vigilante members allegedly connected to the fatal shooting of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State.
Authorities confirmed that the suspects remain at large, with specialised tactical teams already deployed to locate and arrest them as part of ongoing investigations into the incident.
The Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Okon Placid, disclosed these developments during a press briefing on Sunday, where he also announced disciplinary measures against officers implicated in the killing.
Police accounts indicate that the tragic event occurred on April 26, 2026, shortly after the deceased received a parcel sent from Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
Ogidi was reported to have proceeded to a motor park in Effurun with the intention of forwarding the package to Sapele when its contents aroused suspicion among bystanders.
Subsequently, concerned citizens conducted a search of the parcel and allegedly discovered a locally fabricated Beretta pistol alongside four rounds of 9mm ammunition.
The situation escalated as witnesses carried out what was described as a citizen’s arrest and promptly alerted law enforcement authorities.
According to the police, a response team led by ASP Nuhu arrived at the scene and took custody of the suspect.
However, the encounter turned fatal when the officer allegedly shot the already apprehended and unarmed Ogidi, an action the authorities have categorised as a clear breach of established rules of engagement.
The police disclosed that a comprehensive investigation conducted by its internal monitoring unit found the conduct of ASP Nuhu and his team to be in violation of professional standards.
The probe established that their actions constituted misconduct, abuse of office, and behaviour capable of disturbing public peace, ultimately resulting in the unlawful killing of the victim.
Reaffirming the institution’s commitment to due process, the police spokesman stated: “The Force wishes to be unequivocal: no criminal suspicion, however grave, justifies extra-judicial action.”
He emphasised further that all individuals, irrespective of allegations against them, are entitled to fair treatment under the law.
Following the outcome of the investigation, ASP Nuhu and three other officers connected to the incident have been arrested.
The Police Service Commission has approved their immediate dismissal from service.
In addition, the case file has been forwarded to the Office of the Attorney General of the Federation to initiate prosecution, with the police pledging full cooperation throughout the legal process.
Beyond the dismissed officers, the police confirmed that investigations are ongoing to apprehend other individuals linked to the incident.
These include the driver who delivered the parcel and two vigilante members believed to have played roles in the sequence of events leading to Ogidi’s death.
Security operatives have since launched coordinated operations across relevant locations to track down the fleeing suspects.
The Nigeria Police Force reassured the public, particularly the bereaved family, of its commitment to ensuring justice and accountability.
The statement stressed: “No rank, no position, and no circumstance will place any officer above accountability.”
Authorities also appealed to Nigerians to remain calm and continue cooperating with law enforcement agencies as the investigation and prosecution processes proceed.
The incident has once again brought to the fore concerns over police conduct, the use of force, and the necessity of upholding human rights within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
