Electoral Violence: Armed Thugs Attack Security Agents, Electorates, Others In Ogun

Electorates and security agents were reportedly attacked during a presidential elections in Ogun state.

Naijanewshub.com.ng reports that armed Thugs numbering over ten attacked a polling unit during Saturday’s presidential and National Assembly elections in Ogun state, dispersing prospective voters and the security agents attached to the polling unit.

According to eyewitnesses who preferred to remain anonymous owing to the volatile nature of security in the area, the miscreants swooped on the polling unit while voting was ongoing and shot sporadically into the air.

They were however resisted by security operatives at the polling unit which included officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force and Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corp (NSCDC).

The political thugs attacked the polling unit allegedly based on the fact that it was an opposition stronghold where their favoured candidate would not get enough votes. The eyewitness that spoke with our correspondent said the attack was totally unexpected as voting was going on without any issue before the thugs struck.

“We were voting in peace and everyone was engaging one another gently. One man who looked gentle came all of a sudden and attempted to jump the queue. He was scolded by people were on the queue and a fight broke out.”

It was gathered that other members of the errant man’s team came out of hiding and started shooting into the air. This made voters to start running for safety and in the ensuing melee, a few people were injured.The bravery of the security agents at the polling unit prevented what would have been a very messy situation.

Though unarmed, the security agents among whom was a female officer of the Civil Defence Corp managed to put the situation under control.Their back-up arrived from the Police, leading to the arrest of three thugs while the rest escaped.

The residents and voters praised the gallantry of the security agents for foiling the plans of the political saboteurs. Voting was subsequently cancelled in the unit and rescheduled for the following day, Sunday, February 26th, 2023.
