Five Arrested In Connection With Omu-Aran Violence

ILORIN – The Kwara State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of five individuals in connection with escalating violence in Omu-Aran, Irepodun Local Government Area, following the attempted escape of a notorious suspect.
The unrest, which began on May 25, 2025, was triggered by the arrest of one Azeez, also known as “A-Z,” a suspected drug dealer and arms trafficker, by operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Squad (AKS).
According to police sources, the operatives were acting on credible intelligence when a mob intercepted them and aided the suspect’s escape.
The officers reportedly withdrew from the scene to prevent further escalation.
Later that day, at around 4:30 p.m., the same group attempted to storm the local police station but were successfully repelled by security personnel.
In a related incident, the mob attacked the Olomu of Omu-Aran’s palace, setting fire to a motorcycle belonging to the monarch’s police orderly.
Tensions remained high on May 26, when a faction of the youths turned their focus to the Olomu Aperan Microfinance Bank.
At approximately 2:00 p.m., the assailants vandalized the bank’s CCTV cameras, signboard, and three vehicles parked on the premises.
They fled as police reinforcements arrived, ensuring the safe evacuation of bank staff. Five suspects were arrested in connection with the attack.
Kwara State Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, has ordered intensified patrols and surveillance across Omu-Aran and its environs to forestall further violence.
The police say investigations are ongoing and have appealed to residents to remain calm, shun the spread of fake news, and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
In a statement, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to maintaining law and order, assuring the public of continued efforts to safeguard lives and property.
