INSECURITY: Wike Orders Massive Security Deployment In Abuja, As Joint Taskforce Begins Operations•••Focus On Kidnapping, Banditry Hotspots

ABUJA – THE Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has ordered a major security reinforcement across Abuja, with heightened surveillance at border communities and all key entry routes into the territory.
Following the directive, a combined security team made up of the military, police, Department of State Services (DSS) and other agencies has commenced operations under a new security initiative known as Operation Sweep.
Speaking while addressing the operatives on Tuesday, the FCT Commissioner of Police, CP Miller Dantawaye, said the deployment was aimed at curbing rising security threats and ensuring residents’ safety, especially as the yuletide season approaches.
He said the minister had provided full logistics support for the operation, while Service Chiefs and the Inspector-General of Police also endorsed the move.
“The FCT minister has given total backing to this operation, particularly in logistics,” the CP said. “Fueling, servicing of vehicles and allowances for personnel have already been taken care of to ensure smooth operations.”
Dantawaye said the taskforce had been directed to focus on communities considered vulnerable to kidnapping, banditry and other criminal activities.
On the rising number of street beggars in the city centre, the CP said security agencies were working with relevant FCTA departments to address the situation, warning that some criminal elements hide under the guise of begging.
“We will profile anyone arrested in black spots. Some of those posing as beggars are not genuine. Many come into the city with criminal intent,” he said.
He added that the evacuation of genuine beggars would follow legal procedures in partnership with the Abuja Environmental Protection Board.
