A lecturer at KolaDaisi University, Dr. Mojisola Karigidi has been awarded a patent by the Patents and Design Registry of the Federal Republic of Nigeria for his groundbreaking invention of a bio-pesticide.
A statement released by the University’s Registrar, Mr Haruna Olawale Adetu on Tuesday stated that the innovative product, derived from medicinal and insecticidal plants, is designed to protect stored legumes and grains, such as beans, maize, and rice, from insect pests, particularly weevils.
“The newly patented bio-pesticide is poised to revolutionize the agricultural sector by addressing two critical issues. First, it aims to significantly reduce post-harvest losses caused by pest infestations during storage. Second, it offers a safer alternative to synthetic insecticides, which are often associated with serious health risks due to their indiscriminate use on food items.”
Commenting on this milestone, the Vice-Chancellor of KolaDaisi University, Professor Adeniyi Olatunbosun, SAN expressed his pride in Dr. Karigidi’s accomplishment. “We are incredibly proud of Dr. Karigidi’s innovative work and the recognition it has garnered. This patent not only highlights the caliber of research conducted at KolaDaisi University but also reinforces our commitment to contributing to global agricultural advancements. We look forward to seeing the positive impact his invention will have on agriculture and food safety,” remarked Professor Olatunbosun.
Reflecting on her achievement, Dr. Karigidi said, “This invention has the potential to transform agricultural storage practices and enhance food security by minimizing losses and ensuring the safety of stored food products. I am grateful for the support from KolaDaisi University and the recognition from the Patents and Design Registry.”
The significance of Dr. Karigidi’s invention was acknowledged on an international platform. To mark World Intellectual Property Day on April 26th, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) scheduled an interview with Dr. Karigidi, which was broadcast by TVC media house.
As the bio-pesticide moves towards commercialization, it is expected to offer farmers a sustainable and health-conscious solution for protecting their crops. This development underscores the vital role of research and innovation in addressing pressing agricultural challenges and promoting food safety.
Dr. Karigidi will speak at the annual meeting of the Latin Africa Programme in June, 2024, as part of her research collaboration in Spain.
