President Tinubu Decorates Disu As Acting IGP, As 35 Senior Officers Face Retirement

ABUJA — PRESIDENT Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Wednesday formally decorated Tunji Disu as the Acting Inspector-General of Police (IGP), following the sudden resignation of his predecessor, Kayode Egbetokun.
The brief but symbolic ceremony, which took place at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, was attended by senior government officials and ministers.
Disu’s elevation came barely 24 hours after Egbetokun stepped down from office on personal grounds, triggering a significant leadership shift within the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).
Prior to his appointment, Disu had recently been redeployed as an Assistant Inspector-General of Police (AIG) to the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex in Lagos, where he was overseeing nationwide crime-fighting operations.
However, developments following the leadership transition suggest that broader changes may be underway within the force.
The Police Service Commission (PSC) is reportedly considering the compulsory retirement of 35 senior officers, including eight Deputy Inspectors-General of Police (DIGs), as part of what insiders describe as a restructuring process.
Although official details of the proposed retirements were yet to be made public at press time, sources indicated that the move is linked to the ongoing reorganisation of the force’s hierarchy in the wake of the change in leadership.
Observers say the swift decoration of the new acting IGP signals the administration’s intention to ensure stability and continuity within the nation’s policing system while implementing strategic reforms.
The Nigeria Police Force has yet to issue a comprehensive statement outlining the full scope of the restructuring.
