Rivers Police Arrest Wheelbarrow Pusher For Stabbing Market Trader To Death

PORT HARCOURT – THE Rivers State Police Command has arrested a man for fatally stabbing a market trader at the Fruit Market, Oil Mill, Rumuokwurusi, Obio-Akpor LGA, on Saturday, February 14, 2026, around 7:00 a.m.
Police spokesperson CSP Grace Iringe-Koko said the victim, 30-year-old Higightor Wenem of Mbagel Village, Buruku LGA, Benue State, asked a wheelbarrow pusher, Zakara Afaaruwu, to move his wheelbarrow that was blocking his stall. Afaaruwu allegedly refused, leading to a confrontation during which he drew a concealed dagger and stabbed Wenem.
Wenem was rushed to the Military Hospital by fellow traders but was pronounced dead on arrival. His body has been taken to the morgue for autopsy.
The incident reportedly caused brief tensions between Hausa and Benue traders at the market, but swift police action restored order.
CSP Iringe-Koko reiterated the command’s commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state.
Iringe-Koko said, “In the course of the disagreement, the wheelbarrow pusher allegedly stabbed the trader, identified as Higightor Wenem ‘m’ aged 30 years, from Mbagel Village, Buruku Local Government Area of Benue State, with a dagger.
“The suspect has been arrested and is currently in police custody while investigation continues.
“The situation is now under control, and monitoring of the area is ongoing. Further developments will be communicated.
“The Command assures members of the public of its commitment to maintaining peace and security across the state and urges residents to remain calm and law-abiding.”
