Shi’ites Attack Checkpoint In Abuja, Kill Two Policemen, Others In Critical Condition

ABUJA – The FCT Police Command has confirmed what it called “unprovoked attack” on its personnel by the proscribed Islamic Movement of Nigeria, popularly known as the ‘Shi’ite’ group.

The incident which happened on Sunday affected personnel of the Command deployed at Wuse Junction by traffic light, where two officers were killed, three left unconscious in the hospital, and three Police patrol vehicles set ablaze.

In a statement, the Command Spokesperson, SP Josephine Adeh said, “The proscribed organisation attacked the police checkpoint unprovoked, wielding machetes, improvised explosive devices (locally made bombs in bottles with kerosene), and knives.

“While several arrests have been effected, the Commissioner of Police FCT, CP Benneth C. Igweh, Psc. mni. Condemns the unprovoked attack on Police officers. He promises to bring those involved to book.

“The situation is presently under control and normalcy restored. Further development will be communicated in due course.

Recall that, a Nigerian court on July 26, 2019 ruled that activities of the Shia Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) amount to “acts of terrorism and illegality” and ordered the government to ban the religious group.
