Supreme Court Reserves Judgment On Edo Guber

ABUJA -Justice Garba Lawal, leading a panel of the Supreme Court, on Wednesday, reserved judgment in the appeal by Mr Asue Ighodalo and the Peoples Democratic Party, challenging the emergence of Senator Monday Obekpolo as the duly elected governor of Edo State.
The panel adjourned judgment on the matter sine die (indefinitely) after taking arguments for and against the appeal.
Justice Lawal informed parties in the appeal that the date to deliver the judgment would be communicated to them accordingly.
Ighodalo’s appeal was argued by Ken Mosia (SAN), wherein he pleaded the apex court to order the removal of Governor Obekpolo and declare him winner of the Edo State governorship election.
The appellant argued before the Supreme Court that he scored majority of lawful votes in the election.
In opposition to the appeal, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), represented by Kanu Agabi (SAN), asked the Court to dismiss the appeal in its entirety for want of merit.
Agabi argued that for Ighodalo and PDP to say that the election was unlawful and illegal, means they cannot turn around and pray the court to declare them as winners of an election that was illegal and marred by electoral fraud.
INEC accused Ighodalo and PDP of being inconsistent in their grievances against the election and pleaded that their case be dismissed for being unmeritorious.
