Tribunal Sets June Date For Ruling On Gov. Aiyedatiwa, Ajayi’s Case

AKURE – Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa, Peoples Democratic Party(PDP) candidate in the last governorship election in Ondo State and other would know their fate on June 4, 2025 as the Election Petitions Tribunal on Saturday adjourned till the date to give its judgement on the maters before it.
Adjourning the sitting till June 4, 2025 after adopting all the written addresses of all parties to the matters, Justice Benson Ogubu-led Election Petition Tribunal said the judgement would be handed down on the fixed date.
It would be recalled that Independent National Electoral Commission(INEC) had declared the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Lucky Aiyedatiwa, but the candidate of PDP, Agboola Ajayi deferred with INEC, saying the election was fraught with irregularities.
Besides PDP, which is the main opposition party, other political parties that participated in the election, including Social Democratic Party (SDP) and African Democratic Congress (ADC) also filed petitions before the tribunal.
Meanwhile, the written addresses of the petitioners were adopted and asked the tribunal to set aside the results of the election.
PDP, through its attorney, Bankole Akomolafe, told the court that the certificate of return issued to Aiyedatiwa by INEC should be invalidated on grounds of substantial non-compliance with the Electoral Act.
Other opposition parties, including the Presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Prince Adewole Adebayo, also prayed the Tribunal to nullify the election results.
Nevertheless, the attorney to Aiyedatiwa, his Deputy, Dr. Olayide Adelami, INEC, and other respondents led by Chief Wole Olanipekun, Tayo Oyetibo urged the court to dismiss the petitions.
They told the tribunal that there was nothing substantial to show irregularities in the election.
They further told the court that the petitioner only brought before the tribunal four witnesses, their words are not substantial enough to nullify the election across the 18 local government areas of the state.
Justice Benson Ogbu-led, therefore, fixed June 4, 2025 for the judgement.
