IBADAN — THE race for the Agodi Government House in 2027 is gathering momentum as the Director-General of the Oyo State Agribusiness Development Agency (OYSADA), Dr. Debo Akande, has hinted at his intention to contest the state’s governorship election.
Akande made this known over the weekend during a live programme on Splash FM in Ibadan, where he expressed confidence in his ability to lead the state.
Responding to a direct question on whether he would consider succeeding his principal, Governor Seyi Makinde, Akande said, “I have what it takes to become the Governor of Oyo State.”
Although he stopped short of making a formal declaration, his comments have further heightened political permutations ahead of the expiration of Governor Makinde’s second term on May 29, 2027.
The governor had earlier suggested that his preferred successor should be within the age bracket of 50, a position that has sparked debate and increased interest among younger political actors in the state.
Akande’s remarks add to the growing list of potential aspirants being mentioned in political circles.
Among them are the Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Adeniran; former Commissioner for Finance, Mr. Bimbo Adekanmbi; and a member of the House of Representatives, Hon. Stanley Olajide, popularly known as Odidiomo.
Political observers note that Akande’s measured response reflects a strategic balancing act maintaining loyalty to the current administration while subtly positioning himself within the unfolding succession dynamics.
“It is for the people of Oyo State to determine whether I am qualified for that position,” he added.
With the countdown to the 2027 transition underway, political activities within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and across the state are expected to intensify, as stakeholders begin to align ahead of what promises to be a keenly contested governorship race.
