Eruku Attack: State Security Council Explains Schools Shutdown In Kwara, Urges Social Media Restraint

ILORIN – THE Kwara State Security Council has clarified the reasons behind the temporary shutdown of schools in parts of the state, saying the measure is a strategic response to evolving security threats, particularly the activities of organized kidnapping gangs.
This followed Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq’s security council meeting on Friday, where military commanders, police chiefs, and senior government officials reviewed ongoing operations after Tuesday’s attack on Eruku community in Ekiti Local Government.
Briefing journalists after the meeting, Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi said the council received intelligence reports and operational updates from security agencies, especially efforts to apprehend the perpetrators of the Eruku attack and rescue abducted victims.
He said intensified air interdictions had already pushed kidnappers out of known hideouts, notably in Ifelodun, while new tactical deployments were being sustained across the state.
Adekimi announced that several arrests had been made, including food and fuel suppliers linked to the criminal network, as well as a weapons technician from Makurdi who confessed to working with the kidnappers.
He explained that the shutdown of select schools was part of a broader safety strategy and may be reviewed depending on intelligence.
“Measures may be relaxed, sustained, or extended based on actionable security reports,” he stressed, noting the broader regional security concerns following fresh developments in Niger State earlier on Friday.
The council approved intensified joint patrols ahead of the Yuletide and advised citizens to avoid risky nighttime activities.
It also raised concerns about the misuse of social media during security operations, warning that reckless posts — including discussions about ransom — could endanger lives.
A minute of silence was observed for victims of the Eruku attack as the council commiserated with their families.
