Oyo Abduction: Senate Urges Security Agencies To Deploy All Resources For Rescue

ABUJA —- THE Senate has “in the strongest possible terms” urged the Federal Government through all relevant security agencies to intensify efforts and deploy all necessary resources for the immediate rescue of the victims.
It also condemned the abduction of 49 people, including school children, teachers and a toddler, in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State, and urged the Federal Government to deploy all necessary resources for the immediate rescue of 45 victims still in captivity.
The resolution followed a motion sponsored by Senator Buhari Abdulfatai (Oyo North) titled “The Abduction of School Children, Teachers and a Toddler in Oriire Local Government Area of Oyo State.”
Senator Buhari noted with grave alarm that 49 people were abducted by armed kidnappers in Ahoro-Esiele and adjoining communities of Oriire LGA. Three were shot, one beheaded, while 45 remain in captivity.
The Senate condemned the abduction of the school children, teachers and toddler and commiserated with the affected families, communities and the Government of Oyo State.
The Upper Chamber noted that the victims were abducted from a learning environment which ought to symbolize safety, hope and the future of the Nation. “When schools become hunting grounds for criminals, the future of the Nation itself is imperiled,” the motion stated.
The Senate expressed sadness that one of the victims, Mr. Michael Oyedokun, a Mathematics teacher, was beheaded in a gruesome manner and recorded for the public to watch. The chamber described it as a most barbaric act, which has struck fear into the people of the State, and Nigerians at large.
Lawmakers said they were deeply disturbed that among those held in captivity is a toddler whose age and vulnerability underscores the cruelty and inhumanity of the perpetrators.
The Senate called on the Federal Government to strengthen and expand the Safe Schools Initiative through enhanced surveillance, intelligence gathering and improved security deployment around vulnerable schools and communities across the country.
The chamber observed that the incident has generated anxiety and public outrage while raising serious concerns about the security of schools and rural communities across the Federation.
The Senate acknowledged the visit of the Federal Government delegation led by the Chief of Staff to the President, alongside the National Security Adviser, the Minister of Defence and the Inspector-General of Police, to Oriire Local Government on Sunday, May 31, 2026 to commiserate with the families of the victims.
Moving the motion, Senator Buhari said: “Mr. President, Distinguished Colleagues, it is sad that these criminals and evil-minded people are now everywhere in our country therefore, we should beef up security in the country to secure the lives and properties of our citizens.”
