Backlash As Osupa Labels Ibadan Opponents Of Olubadan’s Candidate ‘Bastards’ At Alli Rally

IBADAN — CONTROVERSY has trailed comments made by popular Fuji musician, Saheed Osupa, at the governorship declaration rally of Senator Sharafadeen Alli in Ibadan, where he described those opposing the perceived political direction of the Olubadan as “bastards.”
Osupa made the statement while addressing guests at the event held on Friday, where political supporters and stakeholders gathered to declare support for Alli’s 2027 governorship ambition.
In a viral video from the rally, the singer, speaking in Yoruba, said: “Only if you are a bastard from Ibadan that you won’t go where the Olubadan is going in politics. Who is older than the Olubadan among all chiefs? Only a bastard will go to the other side.”
The comment, which appeared to suggest that political loyalty in Ibadan should align with the position of the Olubadan, has since sparked widespread reactions across the state.
While some attendees at the rally were seen applauding the remark, many others have condemned it, describing the language as insulting and capable of deepening political and social divisions in Ibadan.
A resident who reacted on social media wrote, “Respect for tradition is important, but no one should be insulted for their political choice. That comment was unnecessary.”
Another commentator added, “This is exactly the kind of statement that escalates tension in an already sensitive political atmosphere. Traditional authority should not be turned into a political weapon.”
The controversy comes amid growing political activities ahead of the 2027 governorship election in Oyo State, with Alli’s declaration drawing attention from key political and traditional figures in Ibadan.
The Olubadan of Ibadanland, a highly revered traditional institution, continues to wield significant cultural influence in the city, often shaping public perception during political seasons, though its role remains largely advisory and ceremonial.
As of the time of filing this report, Osupa had not issued any clarification or apology regarding his remarks, while there was no official reaction from Alli’s campaign team.
