CP Olugbenga Assumes Duty As 49th Oyo Police Commissioner

IBADAN — THE Oyo State Police Command has announced the assumption of office of CP Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga as the 49th Commissioner of Police in the state.
This was disclosed in a press statement issued by the Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, and made available to journalists in Ibadan.
According to the statement, CP Olugbenga takes over from AIG Olufemi Haruna, who served as the 48th Commissioner of Police and assumed office on April 1, 2025.
Describing the new Commissioner as a distinguished officer, the Command noted that his career in the Nigeria Police Force has been marked by dedication, professionalism, and exemplary leadership.
CP Olugbenga holds a Bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, and has attended several professional courses, including the Citizenship and Leadership Course, Capacity Development Course at the Police Staff College, Jos, Community Policing Course in Benin City, and both the Tactical and Strategic Leadership Command Courses at institutions in Kaduna and Abuja.
He was enlisted into the Nigeria Police Force on June 10, 1994, as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police. Over the years, he has served in various operational, investigative, and administrative roles across several states, including Lagos, Abia, Delta, Borno, Kano, Yobe, Oyo, Kogi, and Bauchi.
His extensive career includes postings as Officer-in-Charge of Odaliki Police Post, Divisional Crime Officer at Isheri Division, and Second-in-Command to the Chief Security Officer at the Lagos State Government House.
He also served as Divisional Police Officer in multiple divisions in Delta State, as well as Police Component Commander of Operation Zaman Lafia under Operation Lafiya Dole in Borno State.
Other key roles include Assistant Commissioner of Police (Operations) in Oyo State, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Safer Highway at Force Headquarters, Abuja, and Commissioner of Police in charge of Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) at the Force Headquarters.
A seasoned professional, CP Olugbenga is a pioneer member of the National Institute of Police Studies, Abuja, and belongs to several other professional bodies.
The statement highlighted his record of proactive policing, strategic crime prevention, and effective leadership, particularly in conflict-prone areas.
He has also been commended for fostering inter-agency collaboration and for his bravery and dedication to duty.
Beyond his professional responsibilities, the new Commissioner enjoys writing, reading, dancing, and counselling.
The Command expressed confidence that under his leadership, security of lives and property in Oyo State will be further strengthened, while public trust and strategic policing will continue to improve.
