Davido Appointed Osun Sports Trust Fund Chairman To Drive Sports Growth

OSOGBO – OSUN State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke, has appointed Nigerian music superstar, David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, as the chairman of the newly established Osun Sports Trust Fund, as part of a broader plan to overhaul the state’s sports sector.
The announcement was made by the Deputy Governor and Commissioner for Sports, Prince Kola Adewusi, during a courtesy visit by members of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Osun State chapter, to his office in Osogbo.
Adewusi said the decision to appoint Davido, a global music icon and philanthropist, was driven by the state government’s determination to reposition sports in Osun through innovative partnerships, sustainable funding, and private-sector participation.
According to him, the Osun Sports Trust Fund will serve as a financial and administrative vehicle to attract investments, donations, and sponsorships from within and outside the country to support sports infrastructure, talent development, and youth empowerment in the state.
“His Excellency, Governor Ademola Adeleke, believes in harnessing the influence and credibility of our own Davido to drive private participation in sports development. We are confident this will open new doors for Osun,” Adewusi stated.
He disclosed that the government was also in the process of establishing an Osun State Sports Commission, which would coordinate sports administration, policy implementation, and athletes development.
In line with the ongoing reforms, Adewusi revealed that the state government had commenced plans to renovate and upgrade the Osogbo Township Stadium to international standards, making it capable of hosting national and international sporting events.
Davido, who is Governor Adeleke’s nephew, was said to have accepted the appointment “without hesitation,” expressing readiness to support the state’s efforts in sports development through his global reach and connections.
Davido, an award-winning singer and philanthropist, commands a massive global fan base and has consistently shown capacity to mobilize funds and crowds for social causes.
Many observers believe that with his influence and network, he has the potential to succeed in this new role provided the government creates an enabling environment for him to operate effectively.
The move has been widely received with mixed reactions, with some praising the government’s creativity in involving a public figure with global influence, while others questioned the propriety of appointing a family member to such a strategic position.
Nonetheless, the state government insists the appointment is based on merit and the potential to bring visibility, credibility, and investment to Osun’s sports sector.
