Democracy Day: ADC Accuses Tinubu of Recycling Campaign Promises, Faults National Assembly Recess

ABUJA — THE African Democratic Congress (ADC) has taken a swipe at President Bola Ahmed Tinubu over his Democracy Day address, describing it as a campaign speech filled with promises rather than an account of achievements after three years in office.
ADC, in a statement on Thursday in Abuja by its National Publicity Secretary, Bolaji Abdullahi, said Nigerians expected the President to use the occasion to present tangible results of his administration’s policies, but were instead treated to fresh assurances on economic recovery, job creation, and security.
The party argued that after three years of the Tinubu administration and 11 years of All Progressives Congress (APC) rule, Nigerians deserve concrete outcomes rather than repeated promises.
According to the ADC, the fact that many of the same issues that dominated the APC’s campaign in 2015—such as insecurity, unemployment, poverty, and economic instability—remain at the centre of government speeches is evidence that the ruling party has failed to fulfil its commitments.
“After three years of President Tinubu and eleven years of APC rule, why are we still talking about promises?” the party queried.
The ADC said the President’s Democracy Day speech sounded more like that of a candidate seeking electoral support than that of a leader approaching the fourth year of his administration.
The opposition party maintained that Nigerians are no longer interested in projections and promises of future prosperity but in measurable results that directly impact their daily lives.
While acknowledging the significance of Democracy Day and the sacrifices of the heroes of June 12, the ADC expressed disappointment that the President failed to address what it described as the harsh realities confronting ordinary Nigerians.
The party pointed to the rising cost of living, soaring food prices, increasing transportation costs, and the struggles faced by small businesses as evidence that many citizens are experiencing severe economic hardship.
According to the ADC, Democracy Day should have provided an opportunity for the President to account for the APC’s stewardship over the last decade and explain how government policies have improved the welfare of Nigerians.
The party further accused the administration of focusing on managing public expectations rather than delivering meaningful results.
“A government that is still making promises after eleven years in power is effectively admitting that it has not delivered. Nigerians deserve answers, accountability, and evidence of progress,” the statement said.
The ADC also criticised the National Assembly for proceeding on recess on a day set aside to celebrate Nigeria’s democratic journey.
Describing the legislature as the cornerstone of democratic governance, the party argued that Democracy Day should have provided lawmakers with an opportunity to reflect on the nation’s democratic progress and demonstrate their commitment to holding the executive accountable.
The opposition party said the decision to suspend legislative activities on such a symbolic day reflected what it termed a lack of historical awareness by the APC-led National Assembly.
“The house of democracy should not be shut on Democracy Day,” the party stated, insisting that the occasion should have been used to reinforce democratic accountability and engagement.
