IBADAN — THE political landscape in Oyo State has witnessed a notable shift as Olalekan Ayorinde, the former governorship candidate of the Abundant Nigeria Renewal Party (ANRP) in the 2019 general elections, has officially defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Ayorinde was formally received into the APC by party leaders and chieftains in Oyo State at a well-attended event, described by stakeholders as a strategic development with potential implications for future political alignments in the state.
A native of Ibadan, Ayorinde hails from the Ayorinde family of Oranyan in Ibadan North East Local Government Area, specifically from Ward 2. His entry into the APC was welcomed by the Oyo State APC Chairman, Moses Alake, alongside the Ibadan North East Local Government APC Chairman, Azeez Asimolowo Elewure, Ward 2 Chairman, Chief Morufu Ogboriefon, and other prominent party leaders.
“My commitment remains service to the people and the progress of our dear state,” he said, emphasizing his intention to support initiatives that promote sustainable development across Ibadan and beyond.
In his remarks, Elewure described Ayorinde as a valuable addition to the party, citing his political experience, grassroots appeal, and popularity as key assets that would strengthen the APC ahead of the 2027 general elections.
He added that the development aligns with the vision earlier expressed by the state chairman, Alake, who views the defection as a positive signal for the party’s prospects in Oyo State.
Political observers have interpreted Ayorinde’s move as an indication of growing cohesion within the APC, as well as a sign of renewed momentum as the party continues to attract influential figures committed to governance and development.
