IWD: Oyo NAWOJ Celebrates Women, Calls For Progress On Gender Equality, Leadership Equity

IBADAN — THE Oyo State chapter of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) has congratulated women across Oyo State and Nigeria on the occasion of the 2026 International Women’s Day (IWD), while calling for meaningful progress in gender equality and leadership inclusion.
In a statement jointly signed by the Chairperson of the association, Comrade Omolola Alamu, and the Secretary, Eniola Adeaga, the association described Nigerian women as resilient, hardworking and critical to national development.
The statement noted that the theme for the 2026 celebration, “Give to Gain,” which emphasizes accelerating progress through economic empowerment, strongly reflects the realities faced by many Nigerian women.
According to the association, women remain the backbone of the nation’s economy, contributing significantly across sectors including agriculture, technology, governance and the informal economy.
“Oyo NAWOJ celebrates the trailblazing women who continue to break barriers and drive economic growth in the state and across the country,” the statement read.
The association particularly highlighted the resilience of women in Oyo State, noting that from the bustling markets in Dugbe to emerging technology hubs in Bodija, women are making remarkable strides and redefining leadership.
While celebrating the achievements of women, the association stressed the need for greater inclusion of women in decision-making processes.
“We are not only celebrating how far women have come; we are also demanding a seat at every table where the future of our nation is being decided,” the statement added.
The chairperson also commended female journalists who continue to work tirelessly to amplify the voices of the marginalized and hold society accountable.
As the world marks this year’s International Women’s Day, Oyo NAWOJ reaffirmed its commitment to using journalism as a tool to advocate for women’s rights, empowerment and advancement.
