Makinde Blames Frequent Party Defections On Lack Of Political Ideology

IBADAN – OYO State Governor, Seyi Makinde, has attributed the frequent defection of Nigerian politicians from one political party to another to the absence of genuine political ideology across the country’s political system.
The governor made this known through his Special Adviser on Media and Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Sulaimon Olanrewaju, during the public presentation of a book titled “Omituntun’s Political Ideology of Governor Seyi Makinde,” held at the State Local Government Staff Training School Hall, Secretariat, Ibadan, on Wednesday.
Representing the governor, Olanrewaju said one of the major weaknesses of Nigeria’s democratic practice is the lack of ideological distinction among political parties, which makes it easy for politicians to switch allegiances.
“One of the major challenges of our politics is that there is no real ideological foundation,” he said. “Our parties are almost indistinguishable, which is why politicians find it so easy to cross from one to another, today PDP, tomorrow APC, next week SDP, because there is no philosophical difference guiding them.”
Dr. Olanrewaju noted that although Governor Makinde may not have consciously set out to define a political ideology, his consistent policies, governance style, and principles have evolved into a distinct philosophy that sets him apart.
“Governor Makinde’s approach to governance is guided by clear principles and predictable actions that’s what forms an ideology,” he explained.
“In the United States, you know what Republicans and Democrats stand for. But here, it’s often hard to tell what a politician stands for. The governor seeks to change that — he believes politics should deliver real impact and improve lives.”
He added that Makinde’s motivation has always been about driving progress in Oyo State rather than pursuing personal or political gain.
“Sometimes those who create change may not immediately realize the extent of their influence. Yet, Governor Makinde’s leadership has reshaped the meaning of governance in this state,” he said.
The event was attended by prominent personalities, including veteran broadcaster and former Nigerian Ambassador to the Philippines, Dr. Yemi Farounbi; Chairman of the Oyo State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Nureni Adeniran; and the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abdul-Ganiy Agbotomokekere.
Dr. Farounbi commended the governor for redefining political leadership through integrity, transparency, and commitment to service.
“Every citizen has a role to play in building a better Oyo State. Leadership is not the governor’s burden alone; it is a shared responsibility that begins with all of us,” he said.
In his remarks, Sheikh Agbotomokekere praised Governor Makinde’s fairness and generosity towards Muslims in the state, noting his support for interfaith cooperation and the construction of mosques across Oyo State despite being a Christian.
Reviewing the book, Mr. Wale Adewumi described Makinde as “a visionary leader and a symbol of effective governance,” saying the publication captures the philosophy of leadership rooted in integrity, service, and unity.
“The book is not just a record of policies but a reflection of the governor’s philosophy — leadership with conscience and compassion. It offers lessons for current and future leaders to emulate,” Adewumi said.
