PDP Fixes March 28–29 National Convention In Abuja, Reaffirms Caretaker Committee

ABUJA – THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed March 28 and 29, 2026, for its National Convention in Abuja, where members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other statutory organs of the party will be elected.
The decision was taken on Monday at the 105th meeting of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the party, following extensive deliberations on the state of the PDP, recent judicial developments and preparations for internal party processes.
In a communiqué issued at the end of the meeting, NEC also reaffirmed the legitimacy and authority of the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led National Caretaker Committee, with Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu as Secretary, describing it as the only lawful national administrative organ of the party pending the conduct of the National Convention.
The committee further extended the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee, as well as affected state and zonal caretaker committees, pending the conduct of the National Convention and subsequent congresses.
As part of preparations for a smooth transition to an elected leadership, NEC approved a nationwide congress timetable, with ward and local government congresses scheduled for February, while state congresses will hold in March.
NEC directed the National Caretaker Committee, working with the National Organising Secretary and other relevant organs, to issue detailed guidelines and modalities for the congresses in line with the PDP Constitution, INEC regulations and existing court judgments.
On the party’s legal position, NEC welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which upheld the legality of the PDP’s leadership arrangements and directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the duly constituted National Caretaker Committee.
The committee reaffirmed its belief in the independence of the judiciary and the rule of law, urging INEC and other relevant institutions to fully comply with subsisting court judgments in the interest of democracy and constitutional order.
NEC also unanimously reconfirmed and ratified all resolutions reached at the Emergency 104th NEC meeting held on December 7, 2025, stressing that all actions taken pursuant to those decisions remain binding, lawful and operative.
Ahead of the National Convention, NEC mandated the National Caretaker Committee to immediately activate convention sub-committees and commence full logistical, administrative and consultative preparations to ensure a transparent, inclusive and credible exercise.
The committee called on all party members to remain united, disciplined and loyal, warning against actions capable of undermining party cohesion.
Reaffirming its commitment to rebuilding a strong and electorally competitive opposition party, NEC expressed confidence that the resolutions of the 105th meeting would restore stability, strengthen internal democracy and reposition the PDP for future electoral success.
