IBADAN — AN aspirant for the Oyo Central Senatorial District under the All Progressives Congress, Alhaji Ademola Wasiu Alli (AWA), has declared that his involvement in politics is driven by a genuine desire to serve humanity rather than pursue personal or commercial interests.
Alli made this known on Saturday while speaking at an interactive programme organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), tagged “Hot Seat: Real Questions; Real Answers,” held at the Press Centre, Iyaganku, Ibadan.
The senatorial hopeful stated that his political ambition is rooted in effective representation, service delivery, and a commitment to addressing the needs of his constituents while contributing meaningfully to national development.
“My purpose in politics is about my people, and I rely on them. Many citizens feel alienated from governance because they are not adequately carried along in decision-making,” he said.
He emphasised the importance of inclusive governance, noting that understanding the real needs of the people is crucial.
“It is one thing giving people what you think they need and another thing giving them what they actually want,” Alli added.
Highlighting the role of humility in leadership, he remarked that elected officials must always remember their responsibility to the electorate.
“No matter how successful a politician is, he remains a servant to those who elected him. Arrogance has no place in politics. If you are humble, your people will secure you,” he said.
Speaking on legislative duties, Alli identified lawmaking, oversight, and representation as core responsibilities, pledging to leverage his experience in the executive arm of government to deliver impactful representation at the National Assembly if elected.
He noted that his years in public service have equipped him with the knowledge required to contribute effectively to policymaking and governance.
On political mentorship, Alli acknowledged Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other APC leaders as his political mentors.
Addressing the challenges facing Oyo Central Senatorial District, he said his extensive tour of the area had given him firsthand insight into the pressing needs of the people.
He assured constituents that he would prioritise practical solutions if given the mandate.
He outlined key focus areas of his agenda to include training, empowerment, job creation, and attracting federal government projects to the district.
In his remarks, the Oyo State Chairman of the NUJ, Comrade Akeem Abas, reiterated that the union remains apolitical and committed to upholding ethical standards in journalism, free from ethnic or religious bias.
Abas explained that the relaunch of the Hot Seat programme is aimed at providing a credible platform for aspiring public office holders to present their ideas and programmes to the public.
