Rivers Police Set To Clamp Down On Vehicles Without Number Plates

PORT HARCOURT – THE Rivers State Police Command has announced plans to clamp down on vehicles operating without valid registration number plates or with concealed number plates across the state as part of a statewide enforcement operation.
The Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Grace Iringe-Koko, disclosed this in a statement issued on Thursday, stating that the crackdown will commence on Monday, March 16, 2026.
According to her, the exercise forms part of intensified measures by the Command to curb criminal activities, enhance public safety, and ensure strict compliance with traffic regulations across the state.
Iringe-Koko stated that the operation would specifically target vehicles operating without proper identification as well as those illegally using revolving or flashing lights without official authorization.
According to her, any vehicle found violating these regulations will be immediately impounded, while offenders may face prosecution in line with extant laws.
She explained that vehicles without identifiable number plates, as well as those improperly using security lights, pose serious security threats and are often linked to criminal activities.
Iringe-Koko said, “All motorists are advised to ensure that their vehicles are properly registered and display clear and visible number plates at all times. Unauthorized use of revolving or flash lights by private individuals is strictly prohibited and will not be tolerated.
*Defaulters will have their vehicles impounded and may be prosecuted in accordance with the law.”
The police spokesperson also warned motorists against the use of tinted glasses on commercial vehicles, noting that such vehicles are frequently exploited by “one-chance” kidnapping syndicates to perpetrate crimes against unsuspecting passengers.
She therefore urged members of the public to remain vigilant and avoid boarding commercial vehicles with heavily tinted windows.
Iringe-Koko further advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are properly registered and that number plates are clearly displayed at all times, stressing that the unauthorised use of revolving or flashing lights by private individuals is strictly prohibited.
She added that the Commissioner of Police in the state, Olugbenga Adepoju, has assured residents that the enforcement operation will be carried out professionally, fairly and without bias, calling on residents to cooperate with officers during the exercise in order to enhance public safety and security across the state
“Ensure their vehicles have valid and clearly visible number plates, remove any unauthorized revolving or flashing lights from their vehicles immediately, avoid the use of tinted glasses, especially on commercial vehicles, carry all relevant vehicle documents while driving, be vigilant and cautious when boarding commercial vehicles with tinted windows.
“Report any suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through the Command’s emergency lines.”
