ONITSHA — A decisive operation by a police-led joint security team has dealt a significant blow to kidnapping activities in Anambra State, following the rescue of an abducted victim and the arrest of three suspected kidnappers in Nnobi, Idemili South Local Government Area.
The operation, carried out on the evening of April 18, 2026, involved operatives of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) Awkuzu in collaboration with members of the Agunechemba Vigilante Group, Nnobi. Acting on credible intelligence, the security team stormed a bush hideout at Umuezeala Awuda Village, where the suspects were apprehended.
The joint team successfully rescued the victim—an electrician who had been abducted—and arrested three male suspects identified as Chidalu Obi (25), Chichebem Ojenigbo (26), and Chikannechukwu Eze (20). A locally made Beretta pistol and a ransom sum of ₦469,000 were also recovered during the operation.
Preliminary investigations revealed that the suspects lured the victim under the guise of offering him a job. Upon his arrival at the designated meeting point, he was blindfolded at gunpoint and taken to the bush, where he was held captive while the kidnappers demanded ransom.
The suspects reportedly confessed to the crime, admitting they received the ransom payment of ₦469,000, which was traced to a SportyBet account belonging to one of them, Chidalu Obi.
The Anambra State Police Command reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to protecting lives and property across the state. It also called on residents to continue providing timely and credible information to aid ongoing security efforts.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, assured that the suspects would be prosecuted in accordance with the law after the conclusion of investigations.
