IBADAN   — SIX final-year nursing students of the Ladoke Akintola University of Technology (LAUTECH), Ogbomoso, have been confirmed dead following a tragic road accident while travelling to sit for their final examinations.

The victims, all 500-level students in the institution’s Open and Distance Learning (ODL) Bachelor of Nursing Science programme, were reportedly on their way to Ogbomoso, Oyo State, when the fatal crash occurred.

Sources within the university community disclosed that the six students died at the scene of the accident.

Their bodies have since been deposited in a mortuary pending autopsy and further directives from relevant authorities.

Among the deceased was a student said to have been heavily pregnant at the time of the incident, a development that has further deepened the grief and shock surrounding the tragedy.

The incident has cast a sombre mood across the university community, particularly among classmates and lecturers who had looked forward to receiving the students for what was expected to be the final phase of their academic journey.

Colleagues described the deceased as dedicated professionals who combined demanding hospital duties with rigorous academic work.

It was gathered that the victims were practising nurses prior to their deaths, balancing careers, family responsibilities and professional training in pursuit of higher qualifications.

As of the time of filing this report, the management of LAUTECH had yet to issue an official statement detailing the circumstances surrounding the crash.
