Three Killed As Truck Rams Tricycle In A’Ibom

AKWA IBOM —- TRAGEDY struck on Wednesday at Ette Junction in Ikot Abasi Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State as a speeding Mack truck rammed into a commercial tricycle, killing three persons on the spot.
The fatal crash, which occurred along a busy operational route in the area, reportedly involved a Mack truck with registration number XS 761 LSD. Eyewitness accounts indicated that the driver of the truck lost control while attempting to overtake a parked vehicle belonging to Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Limited.
In the process, the truck veered off course and slammed into an oncoming tricycle, crushing its occupants and leaving three victims dead instantly.
Although the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) had yet to issue an official statement as of press time, the management of Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Limited confirmed the incident and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives.
The company’s Media Director, Aniekeme Finbarr, in a statement issued in Uyo, described the accident as tragic and heartbreaking.
“We regret to confirm a tragic road traffic incident that occurred along our operational route at Ette Junction, involving a Mack truck with registration number XS 761 LSD. While overtaking one of our parked vehicles, the truck collided with a commercial tricycle, and sadly, the incident resulted in three fatalities,” the statement read.
Finbarr added, “We are deeply saddened by this loss and extend our heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the deceased. Our thoughts are with all those affected during this very difficult time. As a member of the host community, we stand by them with all necessary support.”
He disclosed that security agencies, including the Police and the Joint Task Force (JTF), had been deployed to the scene to restore order and ensure the free flow of traffic, while investigations into the circumstances surrounding the crash had commenced.
“The Police, JTF, and other security agencies are currently on the ground managing the situation, ensuring free flow of traffic, and establishing the full circumstances surrounding the incident,” he said.
Reaffirming the company’s commitment to safety, Finbarr noted that Sterling Petrochemical and Fertilizer Limited had, over the past year, intensified safety measures along its operational corridors.
According to him, the measures include distribution of free reflectors to motorcyclists, safety awareness campaigns against reckless riding, stricter speed monitoring for company trucks, and deployment of over 30 trained flagmen at high-risk نقاط, particularly during low visibility periods.
He assured that the company would continue to uphold high safety standards and provide updates as more details emerge.
