DSS has reacted to UK, US warning of terror attack in Abuja.
Naijanewshub.com.ng The United States of America (USA) and the United Kingdom (UK) Embassies in Nigeria have alerted their citizens of an “elevated risk of terror attacks in Nigeria”, specifically in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.
In a security notice issued to its citizens, which has gone viral on the social media causing panic among Abuja residents on Sunday, the US Embassy said the potential targets by terrorists include government buildings, places of worship, schools, markets, shopping malls, hotels, bars, restaurants, athletic gatherings, transport terminals, law enforcement facilities, and international organizations.
The US Embassy, however, advised its nationals to avoid all non-essential travel or movement, stay alert, avoid crowds and review their personal security plans and keep their cell phone charged in case of emergency, including carrying proper identification.
The Embassy also said, it will offer reduced services until further notice.
Reacting to the development in a terse statement to Daily Independent, the Spokesperson of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dr Peter Afunanya said, there’s no cause for alarm.
According to him, “DSS has received several enquiries relating to the security advisory issued by the US Embassy in Abuja, today, 23/10/22. The public may recall that the Service had variously issued similar warnings in the past.
“While advising that necessary precautions are taken by all and sundry, the populace is enjoined to remain alert and assist security agencies with useful information regarding threats and suspicious criminal acts around them.
“Meanwhile, the Service calls for calm as it works with other law enforcement agencies and stakeholders to maintain peace and order in and beyond Abuja.
However, Naijanewshub.com.ng gathered from reliable sources that, the Nigerian Intelligence Community has been on top of the situation before the leaking of the secret security advisory on the social media.
