Oyo state government in it’s efforts toward achieving adequate health care service for all and sundry across all the 33 local government areas of the state, has commissioned an ultra modern health care center in Kosobo Community of Oyo town, located in Oyo East local government part of the state.

The health care facility that was named after the former chairman of the local government, late Honorable Kamorudeen Abiola Shittu, according to the Executive Chairman of Oyo East local government, Honorable Arowosaye Saheed Adeyemi popularly known as (AROSAD) is a project conceptualized by Association Of Local Government Of Nigeria (ALGON) since 2003/2004.

In his address at the event, the Executive Secretary of Oyo State Primary Healthcare Board, Dr. Muideen Babatunde Olatunji pledged that the state government will do everything within it’s power to ensure that the facility serve it’s purposes in the community.

Dr. Muideen Babatunde Olatunji in his words said, “There was a time we had ALGON that are very strong and they meet regularly, this health facility is one of their contributions to the development of health care service to the nation, and they contributed something like this to certain locations across the country and that was when this one in particular was conceptualized in 2003/2004.”

“This particular project started in 2003 but was abandoned unfortunately due to change of government by subsequent administrations, this is what led to the delayed of this project, although we had informations that it has been paid for, but some of the projects were not completed, so the project was an abandoned project for quite some time, I was even here four or three years ago to inspect this same facility which was already been vandalized.”

“The current chairman of this local government, Hon Saheed Arowosaye who has deemed it fit to get across to the contractor handling the project and make it even more habitable and that was what led to this new touch, though the project should be more than this, some facilities need to be provided, but they were not provided now, some infrastructures need to be constructed but they’re yet to be constructed, but it’s better the way it is now than an abandoned way that it was, this new administration of this local government has been able to help us to rejuvenate the facility, they have saved it from becoming a complete waste.”

“The state government primary health care was brought in to be able to owned it and that is what reflected in my speech, the state will see what we can do to make sure that all the investments on it does not come to a ruin, they will seek the community support to assist government to make it habitable and functional, the primary healthcare board will provide within the limit what we can do to make it functional and at the end of the day the community will be better of it.”

“We had a concept of world Heath system whereby we have one facility per ward, we have one in every wards but when you have a population that is more than five thousand, you can actually have another facility, the current facility had a population in the excess of the proscribed members, that necessitate this one that is actually come in handy and it’s in a reasonable distance to the existing one, and we can actually have catchment area. I mean some community will become a catchment area for this one by that they can serve the community better.”

“We want a situation whereby for someone to go the facility and remove hindrances to access adequate health care, we want to remove financial burden, this is a facility that some people within the community can actually walk through within five kilometer radius, they can walk into the facility and access care without looking for money, transportation or other means, this one will further expand care to the people of the community, it’s quite fundamental and quite commendable that this facility is coming on board to support the existing ones.”

“There must be a community ownership, they must own the facility, they must not say it belongs to the government, have asked them to provide security for the facility by then, they can lay claim to the facility and be part of the management of the facility, they should not lay back, they should give their support to the facility both financially or otherwise, in any way the facility can be made functional the community should be able to do that one and we should encourage our staff again to interface with the community as much as possible.”

“The state government procured drugs every months and that means this facility will now be listed among the facilities that will be supply with such drugs now, whenever there is a supply of drugs to this local government, at the primary health care board level, though we have serious issue with human resources for now, but to support them, I made pledge that the primary health care board will pay for at least three ad-hoc personnel to support the existing staff there, pending the time the government will do proper recruitment of staff and we can now deploy them to this facility, the board will surely do that.”

In his words Honorable Arowosaye said, “This building is a contribution from the ALGON and although the money for proper construction have been removed from the ALGON purse since 2003/2004 but God in his mercy use this government to recall the contractor handling the project and we are waiting for the state government to help us with the staff that will be deploy here, but I’m grateful for the people of Kosobo community for their support on this project, I’m also urging them to continue supporting us.”

“The people of this community have done well by providing electrification support because the project doesn’t come with electrification but the people of this community have done that, they’ve fixed all the damaged water pipes and that really touched me and I said I will assist them with portable water supply and as we speak today borehole has been constructed, it cost me nothing less than 1.5 million naira, because it will be a shame for me coming here for commissioning of this edifice without adequate water supply, this is a community driven project so I’m urging the people of this community to keep supporting the government in terms of maintenance of this health facility, this is a huge hospital, I can say it’s even the largest in this community, because it also comes with modern facilities, it has hostel facilities for doctors and nurses among many other facilities.”

“What we are doing here shows that we’re actually following the footsteps of Governor Makinde’s agenda in line with provision of accessibility to medical facilities in all wards across all our local government and that’s what exactly we’re doing here today. When the money was deducted from the ALGON purse then for the construction of this health facility, the then local government chairman for Oyo East was Hon Kamorudeen Abiola Shittu, though he has gone to meet his creator but his legacies is what we are here to celebrate, this is a man while he was alive even before we all come across or known Engr Seyi Makinde as person, he was an advocate and strong supporter of Engr. Seyi Makinde, if he’s alive today, he will be at forefront of this government, so whatever we do today will become history tomorrow, and that is why we’re naming this facility after his name, so this facility will be name Kamuroodeen Shittu Abiola Maternity Center Kosobo, we’ve done this in memory of his good legacies.” Hon. Arowosaye Saheed said.

In her remarks, the wife of them late Ex- Chairman, Alhaja Monirat Shittu, said,” This hospital has been built since twelve years ago when my husband was the chairman of this local government, but due to changing of government it was abandoned but I’m so grateful to God, to the state governor, Engr. Seyi Makinde and the current chairman of this local government, Honorable Arowosaye Saheed for naming this edifice after my husband, we are so proud of this and I’m speaking on behalf of the entire family of Shittu that we are so grateful.”
