Police Arrest Suspect Over Attack On Commercial Motorcyclist On Ibadan

IBADAN – THE Oyo State Police Command has arrested a 38-year-old man, Saheed Eegunjobi, in connection with a violent attack on a commercial motorcyclist in Ibadan.
The Command’s Public Relations Officer, DSP Ayanlade Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, noting that the arrest followed a joint effort between the police and community-based security partners, particularly operatives of the Agbekoya Vigilante Group.
According to the police, the suspect and an accomplice, who is currently at large, allegedly posed as passengers and boarded a commercial motorcycle from the Mokola area of Ibadan before launching the attack.
“Upon reaching Modina Area, Idi-Aro, the suspects stopped the motorcycle and attacked the rider, Sakiru Tiamiyu, 32, inflicting injuries on his head with a cutlass,” the statement said.
The police added that the victim fell off the motorcycle during the assault, while the fleeing accomplice escaped with the stolen bike.
Eegunjobi, however, was apprehended at the scene by passersby and subsequently handed over to a patrol team attached to the Idi-Aro Police Division through the intervention of local vigilante operatives.
The Command revealed that the suspect confessed to the crime during interrogation.
The injured motorcyclist was immediately rushed to a medical facility for urgent treatment, while police operatives visited both the crime scene and the hospital as part of preliminary investigations.
Efforts are ongoing to arrest the fleeing accomplice and recover the stolen motorcycle, the police said.
The Command described the arrest as a testament to the effectiveness of collaboration between the police, vigilante groups, and members of the public in combating crime.
It also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, for what it described as his continued leadership and support toward strengthening community policing and public safety nationwide.
While urging residents to remain vigilant, the police encouraged members of the public to continue providing useful information to security agencies.
The Command reiterated its commitment to tackling criminal activities through intelligence-driven and community-based policing strategies, assuring residents that the safety of lives and property remains its top priority.
