Tragedy In Abuja: Five Dead, 11 Rescued From Collapsed Three-Storey Building

ABUJA — FIVE persons have been confirmed dead while 11 others were rescued alive after a three-storey building under construction collapsed in the Gudu District of Abuja in the early hours of Saturday.
The incident occurred at about 3:30 a.m. at a construction site located behind the Gudu Market in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
According to a statement issued by the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), emergency responders are still carrying out search-and-rescue operations at the scene to locate more victims believed to be trapped under the rubble.
The statement, signed by FEMD Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, disclosed that a total of 16 persons had so far been pulled from the debris.
“Search and rescue operations are ongoing as emergency responders battle to rescue more persons trapped in the rubble of a collapsed three-storey building at the Gudu District in the FCT,” the statement read.
It added that 11 of the rescued victims were taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Abuja, Asokoro District Hospital and Maitama Hospital for medical treatment.
“However, five other victims lost their lives during the incident,” FEMD stated.
The agency noted that most of the victims trapped in the collapsed structure were labourers working at the construction site.
Emergency agencies currently at the scene include the Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department, the National Emergency Management Agency, the Federal Fire Service, the FCT Fire Service and the Nigeria Police Force.
Officials said rescue efforts would continue as authorities work to determine the cause of the collapse.
