ABUJA — THE Nyesom Wike-backed National Caretaker Working Committee (NCWC) led by Abdulrahman Mohammed has exposed plot by the Tanimu Turaki-led Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to halt its National Convention scheduled for March 29 and 30.
Addressing a press conference on Sunday in Abuja, the National Publicity Secretary of NCWC, Hon. Jungudo Haruna Mohammed, said that Turaki-led PDP has ignored several invitations and opportunities for reconciliation and dialogue extended to them.
He said: “Certain individuals have continued to take steps aimed at undermining the stability and progress of our party. We are aware of moves by this group led by Kabiru Tanimu Turaki, SAN to approach courts in Ibadan in a bid to secure an injunction to halt the forthcoming National Convention.
“This is particularly unfortunate given that the leadership of the party had, in good faith, extended several invitations and opportunities for reconciliation and dialogue. Regrettably, these overtures were ignored, as the said faction failed to present itself for meaningful engagement.”
Mohammed explained that they convened the press briefing to confront what it described as growing distortions around the party’s leadership status and the impending convention.
Declaring that judicial clarity on the matter is no longer in dispute, the Wike-backed NCWC said, “the position of the courts on the leadership of the PDP remains unequivocal. The judgments of The Federal High Court and The Appeal Court have affirmed the legitimacy and authority of the National Caretaker Working Committee as the body duly recognized to steer the affairs of the party at this time.”
Anchoring its position on these rulings, the committee stressed that the decisions are neither advisory nor optional.
“These judicial pronouncements are binding and remain in full force. We therefore urge all members of our party and the general public to be guided accordingly and disregard any contrary claims or misleading narratives.”
But beneath the legal certainty, the party hinted at a simmering internal battle.
Mohammed, who expressed alarm over what it called calculated attempts by a faction to destabilise the party, framed the development as a test of the party’s commitment to its own ideals, insisting that unity and legality must prevail over factional manoeuvres.
“The PDP remains committed to unity, internal democracy, and the rule of law. However, we will not allow the collective interest of our party to be derailed by actions that are clearly at variance with these principles,” he said.
Raising the stakes, the party called on judicial authorities to take a closer look at what it described as abuse of court processes aimed at frustrating its lawful activities, adding, “In this regard, we respectfully call on the Honourable Chief Judge of the Federal High Court and the State Chief Judge to take judicial notice of these atten abuse court processes and to frustrate the legitimate activities of our party.”
Even as tensions rise, the PDP said it is placing its faith in the justice system, adding, “we reaffirm our confidence in the judiciary as the last hope of the common man and trust that justice will continue to be served in accordance with the law.”
On the convention itself, the message was unmistakable: there will be no postponement.
He said: “Furthermore, we wish to categorically assure all Nigerians, particularly our members across the country, that the National Convention of our great party scheduled for the 29th and 30th of March 2026, will proceed as planned.”
According to the committee, groundwork for the event has been completed, with assurances of transparency and credibility. “All necessary arrangements have been concluded, and the party is fully prepared to deliver a successful, transparent, and credible convention.”
The NCWC called for discipline and unity within its ranks as the party approaches a defining moment. “We therefore urge all members to remain steadfast, law-abiding, as we continue to work together in the overall interest of our party. The PDP remains united, strong, and determined.”
Reacting to the allegation of derailing the reconciliation exercise, Turaki-led PDP said that Wike faction should be blamed if the reconciliation process hits the rock.
In a telephone chat with newsmen, the National Publicity Secretary of Turaki-led PDP, Comrade Ini Ememobong, challenged Mohammed to list the overtures they have made.
He said: “He should list the overtures that have been made. The world will see that from the day we took the decision, we have stalled everything. We postponed the NEC meeting. Postponed the caucus meeting and remained very quiet. You will see that they have been the one weaponizing, going about, behaving as if they hold the space. If reconciliation process hits the rock, it will be their problem.”
